In the 1998 Grammy Awards, it was named Song of the Year and Record of the Year. "Sunny Came Home" is Colvin's most successful single to date. #"What I Get Paid For" (Colvin, Neil Finn) (3:23) #"Sunny Came Home" (Colvin, John Leventhal) (4:24) It should be noted that the version that played on most radio stations was edited approximately 30 seconds of instrumental music was cut out, mostly at the end of the song. ![]() 1996.]Īt the end of the song, the lighting of a match can briefly be heard, followed by a quick breath to presumably put the flame out. The song's calming and upbeat music, fronted by a distinctive mandolin strum, contrasts sharply with the destructive lyrics, particularly the haunting bridge: "Count the years you always knew it / Strike a match go on and do it". The title of the song comes from the opening lyrics. It is one of several "story songs" on "A Few Small Repairs", a method of songwriting Colvin began experimenting with while writing for the album. It is the theme song to her 1996 concept album " A Few Small Repairs", and quickly became a hit when it was released as a CD single on June 24, 1997. "Sunny Came Home" is a Grammy Award-winning folk-rock song by American musician Shawn Colvin. Take that for what it’s worth.Prev_track = "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" “Sunny Came Home” is just one of Shawn Colvin’s many great songs (and not even one of my favorites). If you like acoustic music, I’m certain you’ll like what you hear. So yes, this is a fawning recommendation for more people to discover the music of Shawn Colvin. I’ve stayed with her ever since and remain a fan. She was the shining light of the “New Folk” movement, along with Suzanne Vega (yet another unlikely one-hit wonder with DNA’s version of Tom’s Diner). So did the Grammy Awards jury who awarded the album with Best Contemporary Folk album in 1991. I picked up her debut CD titled Steady On back in 1989 and thought she had an amazing and distinctive voice. She’s also very gracious the few times I’ve met her. I’ve seen her live many times and she is an exceptional performer. That’s my opinion and I’m sticking with it. With 10 albums behind her (and 10 Grammy nominations and three wins), Colvin is one of the best artists and singer-songwriters to emerge from the 1990s. Not many one-hit wonder songs ever reach that level of accomplishment or acclaim. She also won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1998. Meanwhile, A Few Small Repairs inched into the Top 40 at #39. ![]() “Sunny Came Home” reached #7 on the Billboard Top 40. ![]() “Sunny Came Home” and A Few Small Repairs both represent Colvin’s only appearances in the Billboard Top 40. But pop music fans are a fickle bunch and like Brick by Ben Folds Five, it’s not always the obvious hit that becomes an artist’s most popular song. If you know Shawn’s music, you would expect more hits, more love, more adoration. Who knew a song about burning down a house and a concept album about divorce would turn into Colvin’s only brush with the Top 40? That song is “Sunny Came Home” from her fifth album, A Few Small Repairs. I count myself in that group.īut she’s only landed one song in the Billboard Top 40. Many people love her voice, her guitar playing and songwriting. I have always been a huge Shawn Colvin fan.
